The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that the Philippines may experience strong typhoons from June to August, urging the public to prepare for potential impacts. Strong weather systems may form due to the combination of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and the so-called Super El Niño, which could bring heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of the country.
High Probability of Severe Weather
According to the agency's study, there is a 92% probability of this combination of weather patterns, said Ana Solmoro-Solis, head of CLIMPS at PAGASA. The state weather bureau noted that the effects of the habagat could intensify, particularly in the western section of the country, when it coincides with the start of the rainy season.
Potential for Strong but Fewer Typhoons
PAGASA added that although fewer typhoons may form during this period, they could be strong, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, or gusty winds with sudden downpours. In recent weeks, several areas in the country have experienced flooding even from mere thunderstorms. Therefore, residents in flood-prone areas are reminded to prepare, especially since issues with flood control projects persist in some parts of the country.
