In a heartening display of environmental stewardship, a critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle has been placed under protective care in Zamboanga Sibugay. The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Mabuhay town is now overseeing the reptile's welfare, preparing it for an eventual return to its natural ocean home.

The chain of conservation began on Sunday, December 21, 2025, when Norma Rodrigo, a 39-year-old resident of Barangay Malinao in Mabuhay, discovered the turtle along her community's shoreline. Recognizing the need for expert intervention, Rodrigo voluntarily brought the marine creature to the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station (ZS MARPSTA).
Maritime police personnel promptly assessed the turtle's condition. Finding the animal to be in good health and physically fit, they determined it was a strong candidate for release. To ensure proper protocol and monitoring, the police transferred custody of the hawksbill to the MENRO of Mabuhay on Monday, December 22, 2025.

The municipal environment officers have now taken the turtle under their wing for further observation. Officials stated that the animal will remain in care only for as long as necessary.
