Dumaguete Water Half Marathon Unites 500+ Runners for WASH Advocacy

On March 22, 2026, more than 500 runners participated in the Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW) Kauban Half Marathon, a powerful event marking World Water Day 2026. This gathering served as a resounding call for inclusive access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for MDW's 37,000 customers and the broader Dumaguete community.

Advocacy-Driven Initiative for Public Health

The Kauban Half Marathon transcended a mere race, emerging as an advocacy-driven initiative that united individuals, institutions, and partners in a shared commitment to public health and sustainable development. The impressive turnout underscored a growing community awareness that access to clean water and proper sanitation is a collective responsibility. Finishers celebrated at an Advocates Recognition Wall, which displayed the names of every runner, volunteer, and supporter involved in this meaningful event.

Proceeds from the marathon will directly fund MDW's WASH programs in Dumaguete City and neighboring areas. These initiatives are designed not only to enhance infrastructure but also to promote lifelong hygiene practices, with a particular focus on engaging youth.

Educational Partnerships and Grassroots Impact

Sean Adrian T. Guardiano, Partnerships Focal Person of the Department of Education Schools Division of Dumaguete City, emphasized MDW's expanding role in fostering healthier learning environments. Key contributions include the installation of "Hugas Luwas" handwashing facilities in public schools, complemented by sustained information campaigns on proper hygiene practices.

Beyond the city limits, MDW extends its advocacy through the "Safe Water for All" training program for barangay health workers. This initiative has already been implemented in communities like Manjuyod and Canlaon, equipping frontline workers with essential knowledge to protect public health at the grassroots level.

Corporate Commitment to Sustainable Development

"Metro Dumaguete Water fully believes that access to safe water is a fundamental right," stated Chief Operating Officer Engr. Robert R. Cabiles. "We are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which calls for the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all."

Cabiles added that the company remains dedicated to expanding its social responsibility efforts beyond its immediate service areas through sustained education campaigns, strategic partnerships, and community-based programs.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

The event was made possible with support from key partners, including the Dumaguete City Water District and the Department of Health – Negros Island Region, highlighting the critical importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing water and sanitation challenges. Runners were greeted by a new MDW mural at the Pumping Station 1 Facility in Talay, symbolizing the community's shared vision.

Following the success of the Kauban Half Marathon, MDW plans to scale its impact further. At least six schools—approximately 6,000 students—are expected to benefit from new handwashing facilities to be constructed between 2026 and 2027.

Through these initiatives, Metro Dumaguete Water continues to champion health, dignity, and opportunity for every household it serves. MDW is the joint venture company of the Dumaguete City Water District and Metro Pacific Water, a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investment Corporation, having commenced operations of the city's water system in February 2021. The company stands firm in its commitment to "Safe Water for All" across sports and community events.
