Tragic Drowning Claims Life of Young Technician in Toledo City
A 20-year-old man has died after drowning in a river in Toledo City, Cebu, in a heartbreaking incident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2026. The victim, identified as Daniel Lasala, an aircon technician and resident of 1 Salinas Drive, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, was swimming with friends in the river at Sitio Punong, Barangay Ibo, when the tragedy unfolded.
Details of the Incident
According to police investigations, the Toledo Police Station was notified by staff at the Toledo City General Hospital about the deceased male. It was revealed that Lasala was accompanied by his friends who were also bathing in the river at the time. Witnesses reported that Lasala jumped into the river, but due to the strong current of the water, he was believed to have been swept away and was unable to resurface.
Recovery and Emergency Response
The victim was later found in a mangrove area, approximately 20 meters from the spot where he had jumped. Personnel from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) rushed to the scene and transported Lasala to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, having succumbed to the drowning.
This incident highlights the dangers of swimming in natural waterways, especially during periods of strong currents. Authorities are reminding the public to exercise caution and prioritize safety when engaging in recreational activities near rivers and other bodies of water.
