A series of powerful earthquakes have shaken multiple countries around the world, with devastating consequences. On June 8, 2026, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, with its epicenter located in the ocean about 32 kilometers west of Maasim, Sarangani, at a depth of 33 kilometers.
Mindanao Earthquake Death Toll and Damage
According to the latest count by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of June 18, the earthquake claimed 78 lives, injured 1,339 people, and left 30 missing. The relatively low death toll is attributed to the region's building structures, as most affected areas lack large buildings.
Venezuela Struck by Two Strong Quakes
While Mindanao was still recovering, another disaster struck on the other side of the world. On the evening of June 24, Venezuela was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, quickly followed by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. As of initial reports on June 25, 2026, 32 deaths have been confirmed and 700 people injured, but authorities fear the numbers will rise significantly.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates a 44 percent chance that the final death toll will exceed 10,000, and a 30 percent chance it could reach 100,000. The higher risk in Venezuela is due to the prevalence of tall buildings and dense urban structures, unlike the less built-up areas in Mindanao.
Earthquakes: The Most Treacherous Natural Disasters
Unlike typhoons, which allow for advance warnings and evacuation, earthquakes strike without warning. No technology in the world can predict the exact time, date, or location of an earthquake. In the face of these unpredictable calamities, the most powerful shield is prayer and strong faith, coupled with vigilance and preparedness.
