Bacolod Fire Displaces 71 Families, Causes Millions in Damage

A devastating fire erupted in Bacolod City on Tuesday afternoon, April 21, 2026, leaving at least 71 families homeless and resulting in significant property destruction. The blaze, which started at 3:14 p.m. in Purok Ramon, Magsaysay, Barangay 14, was extinguished by 3:52 p.m., but not before it ravaged the community.

Fire Details and Response Challenges

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire originated at a house owned by Regie Doronilla. It rapidly spread to neighboring homes constructed from light and concrete materials, fueled by the dense residential area. Firefighters faced considerable obstacles during their response, as narrow passageways hindered access for fire trucks. Crews were forced to manually pull and connect water hoses to reach the affected zone, delaying suppression efforts.

The BFP escalated the incident to a second alarm due to the scale of the fire, which impacted approximately 289 individuals. In total, 22 houses were completely destroyed, while 10 others sustained damage. Preliminary estimates place the property damage at around P4.5 million. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, a silver lining in the tragic event.

Immediate Relief and Government Assistance

The displaced families have found temporary shelter at the Education and Training Center School-III, where they are receiving support from local authorities. The City Government has mobilized resources to provide comprehensive aid, including food assistance and financial relief. Richelle Villaprado, head of the Department of Social Services and Development, confirmed that personnel have been deployed for data validation and ongoing monitoring of the situation.

Food packs were distributed promptly, and a mobile kitchen was set up in the barangay to ensure affected residents have access to meals. Financial assistance is being facilitated, with compensation structured based on the extent of loss:

  • Families whose houses were destroyed will receive P15,000.
  • Those with damaged houses are eligible for P10,000.
  • Renters will get between P5,000 and P7,000, depending on assessment results.

Investigation and Ongoing Efforts

Arson investigators are actively conducting inquiries to determine the exact cause of the fire, which remains under scrutiny. The community is rallying together as recovery efforts continue, with a focus on rebuilding and providing sustained support to those affected. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in urban fire response and the critical need for accessible infrastructure in densely populated areas.
