A significant fire erupted in Sitio Tambis, located within Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, on the afternoon of Monday, March 2, 2026. The blaze prompted authorities to escalate the response to a second alarm as dense black smoke engulfed the residential neighborhood, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Timeline and Response to the Incident
The fire was first reported at 3:21 p.m., and within just five minutes, by 3:26 p.m., it was raised to a second alarm. This classification indicated the necessity for additional firefighting resources to combat the spreading flames effectively. A robust emergency response was mobilized, involving 12 fire trucks, two ambulances, and 10 auxiliary responders working tirelessly to contain the inferno.
Their efforts proved successful, with the fire being placed under control at 3:51 p.m. and fully extinguished by 4:03 p.m., resulting in a containment time of approximately 42 minutes from the initial report. The fire affected an area of around 900 square meters, leading to damage to at least nine residential structures in the community.
Impact on Residents and Safety Reminders
The incident had a direct impact on the local population, with approximately 22 families, or an estimated 70 individuals, affected by the fire. One person sustained first-degree burns and received immediate medical attention, but fortunately, no fatalities were reported, underscoring the effectiveness of the emergency response.
This fire occurred at the beginning of March, which is nationally observed as Fire Prevention Month. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about fire safety, particularly during the hot and dry season when such incidents tend to increase. Just one day prior, on March 1, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Central Visayas, in collaboration with the tri-cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue, launched the 2026 Fire Prevention Month under the theme, “Hangad Nating Lahat, Pamayanang Handa, Aktibo at Masagana.”
In light of this event, BFP officials are reiterating crucial safety reminders to the public. They urge residents to regularly inspect electrical wiring, avoid overloading outlets, and practice safe cooking habits to help prevent similar fire incidents in the future. These precautions are especially vital as communities navigate the heightened risks associated with the current season.
