According to an investigation by the Cebu City Fire Station, the fire originated in the home of Filjohn Arrogante. It quickly spread to neighboring houses, which were constructed from light materials, exacerbating the destruction. Senior Fire Officer 2 Wendell Villanueva, the information officer for BFP Cebu City, stated that the blaze was caused by unattended cooking.
Villanueva noted that the individual responsible for the cooking was reportedly under the influence of illegal drugs, which may have impaired their judgment. While some residents have expressed suspicions that the fire was intentional, authorities have emphasized that this aspect remains under investigation to determine the full circumstances.
The incident underscores the risks associated with makeshift housing and the importance of fire safety measures in densely populated urban areas.
