Midday Fire Ravages Commercial Complex in Naval, Biliran

A significant midday fire erupted on Thursday, April 9, 2026, devastating a shopping mall and grocery complex in Barangay Sto. Rosario, Naval, Biliran. The blaze, which involved multiple commercial establishments, prompted a large-scale response from local fire units to prevent further damage.

Fire Origin and Rapid Spread

According to eyewitness accounts, the fire originated from an overheated generator at the HM Department Store. Arnel Payos, a 35-year-old resident, reported hearing an explosion before the flames quickly spread. "The fire wasn't put out quickly because it was in a tight-knit space that the fire trucks couldn't easily pass through," Payos stated in Bisaya. The presence of flammable paint and dry goods in neighboring shops exacerbated the situation, allowing the fire to engulf the area rapidly.

Firefighting Efforts and Containment

The Naval Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded promptly after the fire was reported at 12:02 p.m. To bolster their efforts, units from neighboring municipalities were called in to assist, focusing on preventing the blaze from spreading into nearby residential areas. The BFP successfully contained the fire by 1:22 p.m., though operations continued into the afternoon to ensure complete extinguishment. By 2:42 p.m., the fire was officially declared out.
