A fire broke out at Sudtonggan Elementary School in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, on the first day of classes, Monday, June 8, 2026, damaging part of a classroom. No students or teachers were injured, authorities said.
Fire Incident Details
According to the Lapu-Lapu City Fire District, the incident was reported to their office at 10:46 a.m. Fire Officer 1 Vincent Rhey Reyes said the fire was already under control when responders arrived.
School principal Precious Vano said the teacher quickly evacuated students from the Grade 3 classroom. The fire was extinguished by teachers using a fire extinguisher at 10:50 a.m.
Damage and Investigation
Vano said seven rooms remain temporarily unusable and are under investigation because they are adjacent to the classroom where the fire started. FO1 Reyes told SunStar Cebu that based on initial investigation, the fire possibly started from a defective ceiling fan inside the classroom. Reyes said the ceiling fan was already faulty and should not have been used. The fire affected part of the classroom ceiling.
