A young humpback whale named Timmy, who captured global attention after a controversial rescue attempt in the Baltic Sea, has been found dead off the coast of Denmark, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
Discovery and Identification
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency reported that the whale carcass was discovered near the island of Anholt. Officials confirmed it was the same animal previously stranded in Germany by matching a tracking device attached during rescue efforts.
Timmy's Ordeal
Timmy's struggle began in March when he was first spotted entangled in a fishing net in Wismar harbor. After being freed, he became stranded again near Timmendorfer Strand, a coastal town that inspired his nickname. Over weeks, his health deteriorated as he remained in shallow, low-salinity waters, with livestreams documenting his slow decline.
The rescue operation drew international attention and debate. Some experts argued Timmy was too weak to survive, while others believed intervention was worthwhile, earning him the nickname "Hope." In late April, rescuers transported him in a flooded barge toward the North Sea for release.
However, the 12-meter juvenile humpback was later found dead approximately 130 kilometers from his release point. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the carcass due to safety risks, including potential gas buildup from decomposition. No plans to remove the remains have been announced.
