Iligan City Declares Calamity After Typhoon Basyang Floods Bridge

Iligan City in the Philippines has been placed under a state of calamity following the devastating impact of Typhoon Basyang, which triggered severe flooding that nearly submerged a bridge in Barangay Tubod. The incident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, at around 7:00 AM, prompting local authorities to declare the bridge impassable for all types of vehicles due to safety concerns.

Government Response and Relief Operations

In response to the crisis, national government agencies have mobilized swiftly to support the recovery efforts in Iligan City. On Saturday, February 7, 2026, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, alongside Mayor Frederick Siao, conducted inspections of evacuation centers to assess the progress of relief operations. Secretary Gatchalian emphasized the commitment of the national government, stating, "President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sent me here to see to it no one will get hungry and (everybody is) taken care of."

Evacuation and Aid Distribution

The DSWD has reported that over 21,700 individuals have sought refuge in 33 evacuation centers across the city. However, the total number of people affected by the flooding on February 5, 2026, has risen to approximately 24,540. To address the immediate needs of the displaced families, the agency has already distributed food and non-food relief packs valued at P8.5 million to more than 5,500 households. Additionally, a standby fund of P2.2 million has been allocated to ensure continuous support.

Infrastructure Assessment and Calamity Declaration

Concurrently, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is conducting thorough inspections and assessments of critical infrastructure damaged by the floods, including bridges and dikes. The Iligan City Council unanimously passed Resolution No. 26-101 on Friday, formally declaring the state of calamity. This resolution authorizes the utilization of calamity funds for relief assistance and the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure, facilitating a coordinated response to the disaster.

The declaration of a state of calamity underscores the severity of the situation in Iligan City, as Typhoon Basyang's aftermath continues to challenge local and national efforts. With ongoing relief operations and infrastructure repairs, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected residents during this critical period.
