PNP Mobilizes Forces for Post-Basyang Road Clearing Operations in Mindanao
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has activated its disaster response units to assist in critical road clearing operations across Mindanao and other regions severely impacted by Tropical Cyclone Basyang. This coordinated effort aims to restore mobility and facilitate the delivery of essential aid to affected communities.
Strategic Deployment to Reconnect Isolated Areas
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that the primary objective is to reopen major transportation arteries damaged by the powerful storm. He stated that numerous road sections and bridges in the Visayas and Mindanao remain blocked by debris, hindering relief efforts.
"The government’s immediate response is critical to our kababayan, especially in the hardest-hit areas," Nartatez explained. "The first step is to clear the roads of debris and other obstacles to ensure the fast and smooth flow of government assistance."
On-Ground Coordination and Safety Measures
Police personnel are working in close partnership with:
- Local government units (LGUs)
- Other national government agencies
- Community leaders and volunteers
This collaboration focuses not only on removing physical obstructions but also on ensuring the safety and welfare of displaced residents. Nartatez added that additional police teams are on standby, with commanders instructed to maintain heightened visibility to preserve peace and order in disaster-stricken localities.
Current Infrastructure Status and Impact Assessment
Based on initial situational reports from the PNP and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC):
- Northern Mindanao: At least 37 roads and one bridge remain closed to all traffic.
- Caraga Region: Three roads and two bridges are still impassable.
- Humanitarian Impact: The NDRRMC reports 12 fatalities and 36 injuries as of 8 a.m. on February 10, 2026.
- Population Affected: Over 645,000 individuals, equivalent to approximately 182,000 families, across seven regions including Central Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Davao Region.
The PNP has committed to maintaining its deployment until all major routes are declared safe for public use. Continuous monitoring of the situation will guide their operational timeline, with the force remaining alert to extend further assistance as recovery efforts progress.
