The Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) has swiftly activated comprehensive contingency and response measures after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued an advisory regarding the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
Proactive Safety Measures Implemented
PRO-NIR Public Information Office chief Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong confirmed that Regional Director Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay has directed all chiefs of police and force commanders in identified danger zones and adjacent municipalities to implement proactive measures aimed at ensuring public safety. This directive comes as authorities work to mitigate risks associated with the volcanic activity.
Multi-Agency Coordination for Evacuations
Malong emphasized that police units are actively coordinating with multiple agencies to support evacuation efforts and maintain public order. The coordinated response involves:
- Local government units
- Disaster risk reduction and management offices
- The Armed Forces of the Philippines
- The Bureau of Fire Protection
This collaborative approach ensures that resources are pooled effectively to address the emergency situation.
Deployed Personnel and Monitoring Operations
Police personnel have been strategically deployed to conduct intensified monitoring of high-risk areas, assist in traffic management to facilitate smooth evacuations, secure evacuation centers, and ensure the readiness of mobility and communication assets. Malong stressed that all units must submit real-time situational reports to maintain a coordinated and effective response throughout the crisis.
Public Safety Remains Top Priority
The public is strongly advised to remain vigilant, follow the directives of local authorities, and prioritize safety at all times, Malong stated. PRO-NIR remains fully prepared to safeguard lives and maintain order during this volcanic crisis, with continuous close coordination with all concerned agencies to ensure a unified disaster response for the safety of residents in the Negros Island Region.
