Mandaue City faced significant disruption as Tropical Depression Tino unleashed torrential rains that submerged numerous areas on Monday, July 8, 2024.
The Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported flooding in multiple barangays including Subangdaku, Guizo, Mantuyong, and Alang-Alang. Water levels reached alarming heights, with some areas experiencing waist-deep floods that rendered roads impassable to vehicles.
Emergency Response Activated
CDRRMO chief Mercedita Cortes confirmed their personnel were deployed across affected areas to monitor the situation closely. "Our teams are on the ground assessing the damage and assisting residents where needed," Cortes stated.
The heavy rainfall began around 3 p.m., quickly overwhelming drainage systems and transforming streets into rivers. Motorists faced extreme difficulties navigating through flooded thoroughfares, particularly near the Mandaue City Public Market.
Weather Outlook and Precautions
According to weather monitoring stations, the intense rainfall was directly attributed to Tropical Depression Tino's weather system affecting the Visayas region. Residents in low-lying areas were advised to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuation if conditions worsened.
Local authorities emphasized the importance of staying updated with official weather bulletins and avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods. The CDRRMO continues to coordinate with barangay officials to ensure prompt response to any emergency situations.
