A tragic incident has cast a shadow over Purok Yoso, Barangay Tuyan, Naga City, after the lifeless bodies of two 7-year-old friends were discovered inside an abandoned vehicle on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The Victims
Jheff and Reymart—children full of dreams and energy—lost their lives in a heartbreaking tragedy that has shattered their families. They were last seen playing together, pretending one was the driver and the other a passenger in the back seat, when they became trapped inside a gray Kia Picanto. The car was closed, tinted, and abandoned. It is believed the boys ran out of air and suffocated.
A Painful Reality
It is distressing to think that while the two children likely called for help and screamed inside the sealed vehicle, no one heard them, even though there were houses nearby. The lack of oxygen led to their deaths. Days passed before their bodies were found, already decomposing, after neighbors complained of a foul odor they thought was from a dead animal.
Autopsy to Seek Truth
Although the mothers of the victims, Jhesa Abellar and Bernadette Conag, believe there was no foul play and that it was purely an accident, they have agreed to exhume the bodies for an autopsy. The autopsy aims not only to determine if there were any injuries or signs of abuse before death but also to bring complete peace of mind to the families and the public.
Lessons from the Tragedy
This tragedy leaves two heavy lessons for everyone: first, the responsibility of owners of abandoned vehicles not to leave them open or accessible to children, as broken cars on streets or vacant lots can become dangerous traps. Second, the need for vigilance among parents and the community, as children can easily enter hazardous places if left unsupervised even for a moment.
The deaths of Jheff and Reymart serve as a painful reminder. May their fate be a lesson to every parent, car owner, and barangay official: a safe community starts with awareness and care.
