The Argao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) has issued an advisory warning residents and travelers about the presence of small jellyfish in coastal areas, particularly near Lawis Beach and the Argao Pier. The warning was released on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, following reports and photographs showing clusters of tiny jellyfish drifting near the shoreline.
Jellyfish Characteristics and Risks
Authorities stated that the jellyfish, although small, can cause painful stings, itching, skin irritation, and discomfort. Children and individuals with sensitive skin are especially vulnerable. The jellyfish appear translucent, black, or brown, making them difficult to spot in the water. They are often carried near shore after high tide, strong winds, or warmer sea conditions.
Safety Precautions for Beachgoers
The MDRRMO reminded swimmers and resort guests to carefully check the water before entering and to avoid areas where jellyfish are visible. Wearing rash guards or wetsuits is recommended to reduce skin exposure while swimming. Authorities emphasized that people should never touch jellyfish, even those washed ashore, as their stingers may remain active and can still inflict painful stings.
Parents were urged to closely supervise children during swimming activities to prevent accidental contact with the jellyfish. The advisory aims to minimize incidents and ensure the safety of all beach visitors in the area.
