The journey to this green milestone began in earnest back in 2016. At that time, ACEN's energy portfolio looked starkly different. The company had an installed capacity of roughly 1,000 megawatts, but a mere two percent came from renewable sources. Coal-fired power dominated its operations.
Recognizing the escalating climate risks and the long-term economic costs associated with fossil fuels, ACEN made a decisive pivot. The company redirected its capital and overhauled its corporate strategy to focus squarely on clean energy development.
Expanding a Global Renewable Portfolio
That strategic shift has fueled explosive growth. ACEN's renewable energy portfolio has since ballooned to more than seven gigawatts of attributable capacity. This impressive figure encompasses projects that are already operating, currently under construction, or secured through signed agreements.
While the Philippines remains its core market, ACEN has successfully expanded its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region. The company now has significant operations in Australia, Vietnam, India, and Lao PDR, showcasing its commitment to regional decarbonization.
Aligning with a Sustainable Future
ACEN President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Francia underscored the significance of this achievement. He stated that this milestone reflects the company's long-term strategy to align with the future energy system, which is inevitably cleaner and more sustainable.
Looking ahead, ACEN is not resting on its laurels. The company has set an ambitious long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This 100% renewable generation mark is a critical step on that path, proving that a rapid transition from coal to renewables is not only possible but also strategically sound for major power players.
