Danger-Level Heat Index to Strike Two Visayas Areas Again, Warns Weather Bureau
The state weather bureau has issued a warning that two locations in the Visayas region are likely to experience a danger-level heat index again on Monday, April 6, 2026. This alert specifically targets Dumangas in Iloilo and Catarman in Northern Samar, where the heat index is projected to reach 42°C.
Recent Heat Index Records
On Sunday, both areas already recorded danger-level heat indices, ranging from 42°C to 51°C. Based on a five-day heat index calculation by the weather bureau, Dumangas registered 43°C, while Catarman saw 42°C. These figures highlight the persistent and severe heat conditions affecting these communities.
Understanding the Heat Index
The weather bureau explains that the heat index measures how hot the human body feels, combining air temperature and relative humidity. When humidity is high, sweat evaporation slows down, making it more difficult for the body to cool itself. This can lead to increased risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Safety Recommendations
To mitigate the dangers posed by extreme heat, the public is advised to take several precautions:
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Stay in shaded, well-ventilated, or cool areas as much as possible.
- Use umbrellas, hats, or skin protection when going outdoors.
- Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing to reflect heat.
- Be vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, fatigue, and excessive sweating.
- Consult a doctor immediately if necessary to address any health concerns.
These measures are crucial for protecting against the adverse effects of high temperatures, especially in vulnerable populations.
