The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas has issued a stern warning as high temperatures persist across the region, while simultaneously keeping a close watch on a developing tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Extreme Heat Conditions Prevail
In a telephone interview with SunStar Cebu, Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Ana Dumdum highlighted that the heat index on Sunday, April 12, 2026, is expected to soar to 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. This reading falls squarely within the extreme caution category, which typically ranges from 32 to 41 degrees Celsius, indicating significant health risks for prolonged exposure.
Authorities have strongly advised the public to take preventive measures against the scorching weather. Recommendations include avoiding extended periods under direct sunlight, maintaining regular hydration by drinking plenty of water, and wearing lightweight, breathable clothing to mitigate heat-related illnesses.
Typhoon-Level Storm Under Surveillance
Simultaneously, Pagasa is monitoring a tropical depression located outside PAR as of 10 a.m. on Sunday. According to Dumdum, although the system remains distant from the country, its intensity has already been classified at the typhoon-level based on current meteorological assessments.
Weather specialists note that there is a possibility the storm could enter PAR, but it is anticipated to curve near the boundary rather than making a direct approach. Should it cross into the Philippine monitoring area, it will be named Caloy, marking the third typhoon of the year 2026.
No Immediate Threat, But Vigilance Urged
Despite its proximity, Pagasa has reassured the public that the tropical depression currently poses no direct impact to any part of the Philippines. Dumdum emphasized, "Right now, there is still no clear track. It is still very far, and it is not yet certain if it will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility. However, we are monitoring its possible approach and its potential curve near the boundary."
In addition to the storm watch, Pagasa indicated that while localized rainfall might occur during the third week of April, chances remain minimal due to the ongoing dry season. Authorities have reiterated that heat will continue to dominate over rain, urging citizens to stay alert to heat-related health issues and to consistently heed official weather advisories for updates.
