The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise caution as the heat index is projected to reach between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days. This elevated temperature range is anticipated to cause significant discomfort, particularly during the peak midday hours, prompting concerns over heat-related health risks.
Health Precautions Emphasized by Weather Experts
Weather specialist Joseph Merlas from Pagasa strongly recommended that individuals prioritize staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. He also advised the use of umbrellas or other forms of sun protection when venturing outdoors and encouraged regular monitoring of official weather updates to stay informed about changing conditions. These measures are crucial to mitigate the effects of the impending heatwave.
Weather Patterns Driven by Easterlies
Despite the absence of tropical cyclones over the weekend and in the next two weeks, Pagasa reported that hot and humid conditions will persist across the country. This is attributed to the prevailing easterlies, warm winds originating from the east that are currently influencing the Philippines. Merlas explained that the northeast monsoon, known as amihan, has ceased to affect the region, allowing the warmer easterlies to dominate and contribute to generally fair weather with rising temperatures.
Regional Variations in Weather Conditions
While the easterlies are expected to maintain mostly fair conditions, they will also bring cloudy skies and scattered rains to specific areas. Affected regions include Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, and Davao Oriental. In contrast, Metro Manila and the remainder of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Potential Hazards and Safety Warnings
Pagasa has issued warnings that moderate to heavy rains and severe thunderstorms in the affected areas could potentially trigger flash floods or landslides. Authorities are emphasizing the need for vigilance, even in the absence of storm systems, due to the risks associated with prolonged heat exposure and sudden thunderstorm activity.
Wind and Sea Conditions
Wind patterns across Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao are forecast to be light to moderate, blowing from the northeast to north, resulting in slight to moderate sea conditions. The rest of Luzon will experience similar conditions, with winds coming from the east to northeast, ensuring generally manageable maritime activities.
