PCG Halts Zamboanga-Visayas Trips Due to Storm

Sea Travel Halted as Storm Hits Central Philippines

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has imposed a temporary suspension on all commercial vessel voyages from Zamboanga del Norte to the Visayas region. This decisive action was taken on Monday, November 24, due to dangerous sea conditions caused by inclement weather.

The suspension was officially announced by the Coast Guard Station in Zamboanga del Norte, effectively halting all boat trips originating from Dapitan City that are bound for Cebu and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. The order is in effect until further notice.

Weather Disturbance and Impacted Routes

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Tropical Depression Verbena was located over the province and city of Cebu and Negros Oriental on Monday. The weather bureau also indicated that the storm was approaching the Caraga Region and could potentially make landfall later that same day, November 24.

This weather disruption directly affects the vital Zamboanga del Norte–Cebu–Dumaguete maritime route. This corridor is serviced by five major shipping firms, which include a daily fast craft operation connecting Dapitan City and Dumaguete City.

Safety Advisories and Precautionary Measures

In its official sea travel advisory, the CGS–Zamboanga del Norte made it clear that voyages will only be permitted to resume once weather and sea conditions show significant improvement. The station strongly advised all small vessels, motorboats, and fishing boats to remain in port and avoid setting sail.

For vessels that were already at sea when the advisory was issued, the Coast Guard instructed them to immediately coordinate with the nearest coast guard station or sub-station, seek shelter, and exercise maximum caution while navigating.

The advisory extended beyond commercial transport, with a strong recommendation for all fisherfolk and coastal communities to refrain from venturing out to sea or engaging in any water-related activities while the weather disturbance persists.

The Coast Guard emphasized that the safety of seafarers and passengers is the top priority, urging all vessel operators to strictly adhere to safety protocols and continuously monitor weather updates from Pagasa.
