Southwest Monsoon Officially Begins in the Philippines, Pagasa Says
Southwest Monsoon Starts in Philippines, Pagasa Reports

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has officially declared the onset of the Habagat, or Southwest Monsoon, marking the beginning of the rainy season in the country. This announcement was made on May 31, 2026, at 7:50 PM.

Impact on Western Philippines and Central Visayas

According to Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Ever John Tenio, the Habagat typically affects the western part of the Philippines. However, its effects can extend to Central Visayas, including Cebu, when it is enhanced by a tropical cyclone located in the northeastern part of the country or within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

“Based on past years, when the Habagat is enhanced by a typhoon, Central Visayas experiences cloudy skies and frequent rains that may last throughout the day,” Tenio explained.

Monitoring of Tropical Storm Domeng

Authorities are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Domeng, which may intensify into a typhoon. Forecasters are also watching for a possible low-pressure area (LPA) expected to develop within this week until June 3.

The onset of the Habagat signals a shift in weather patterns, with increased rainfall and potential flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions.

Preparations for the Rainy Season

Local government units and disaster risk reduction offices are urged to prepare for the rainy season by clearing drainage systems, conducting preemptive evacuations when needed, and ensuring that relief goods are readily available.

Pagasa continues to provide regular updates on weather conditions, including the movement of tropical cyclones and the intensity of the monsoon. The public is encouraged to monitor official Pagasa channels for the latest information.
