A tropical depression currently being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is anticipated to enter the region next week, but it is unlikely to have any direct impact on Central Visayas, including Cebu, according to weather authorities.
Fair Weather Forecast for Central Visayas
In a phone interview on Thursday, April 9, 2026, Jhomer Eclarino, the Visayas chief weather forecasting specialist at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), stated that Cebu and the surrounding region will continue to experience generally fair weather through the weekend and into the third week of April.
"There is no expected direct impact even if it enters PAR. We can generally expect good weather conditions to continue through the weekend and into next week. So far, no direct effects are being seen in Central Visayas," Eclarino emphasized.
Direction and Intensification of the Weather Disturbance
Based on current analysis, the tropical depression has a low likelihood of making landfall and is more likely to recurve or move in an upward direction. Eclarino noted that any rainfall in the region will be caused by isolated or localized rain showers.
The weather bureau indicated that the tropical depression may intensify while still over the sea and could develop into a typhoon. Pagasa has not ruled out the possibility of the weather disturbance becoming a super typhoon, though this remains uncertain at this stage.
Extreme Heat Poses Health Risks in Cebu
Meanwhile, Cebu is experiencing high temperatures, with the heat index reaching the extreme caution category. This category refers to heat index levels that feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature and pose serious health risks.
Under these conditions, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible, especially with prolonged exposure or physical activity. Heat stroke could occur if exposure continues without proper hydration and rest, highlighting the urgency of taking preventive measures.
Precautions Against the Heat
In the extreme caution category, the heat index ranges from 33 degrees Celsius to 41 degrees Celsius. Residents are strongly advised to take precautions against the heat, including drinking plenty of water and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to mitigate health hazards.
