The Chinese government has barred Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto 'Gibo' Teodoro Jr., along with his wife and child, from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Additionally, Chinese companies are prohibited from engaging in any transactions or communications with them.
Reason for the Sanction
Beijing cited the secretary's alleged 'wrongful statements' against China, which it claims damage bilateral relations and Chinese interests. However, Chinese authorities did not specify which particular remarks prompted the action.
Teodoro's Previous Comments
As of now, the Defense chief has not issued a statement regarding the sanctions. However, Teodoro had previously stated that he had no plans to visit China. 'Even if I wanted to visit because the food is good and the people are kind, that is overshadowed by the kind of government they have,' he said.
Ongoing Tensions
The ban comes amid heightened tensions between the Philippines and China over disputed maritime territories. China claims sovereignty over the entire region. Recently, the Philippines filed a new complaint against China over the presence of a vessel in the disputed area.
