The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with major telecommunications providers, has deployed free internet and emergency communications services in areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.
Deployment of Starlink Satellite Kits
Through DICT Region 12, the agency set up Starlink satellite kits, charging stations, and free internet at evacuation centers, disaster response offices, and other critical facilities under the Government Emergency Communications System and Free Public Internet Access Program.
Telco Initiatives
One telecom activated satellite-to-mobile service using Starlink for free data and messaging in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani. Meanwhile, PLDT and Smart provided free Wi-Fi, charging stations, and free calls for residents and emergency responders.
According to DICT, telecommunications and internet services remain stable in affected areas while coordination with telcos continues to ensure uninterrupted communication and support for relief and recovery operations.
