In a remarkable coincidence, the Finals of both the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the PBA Commissioner's Cup are set to be played almost simultaneously starting this week. Basketball fans are in for an overload of high-voltage action.
PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals
The PBA Finals begin on Wednesday, June 3, when TNT Tropang 5G faces Barangay Ginebra in a best-of-seven series for the Commissioner's Cup. Game 1 tips off at 7:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
Both teams advanced on Sunday with contrasting victories. Ginebra defeated Rain or Shine 118-107 in Game 6 to clinch the series 4-2, powered by Justin Brownlee's 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists, along with RJ Abarrientos' 30 points. TNT outlasted Meralco 97-94 in the nightcap, also winning 4-2, as coach Chot Reyes' decision to replace Bol Bol with import Chris McCullough paid off.
NBA Finals
The NBA championship showdown kicks off on Thursday, June 4, 2026 Philippine time, between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks. Game 1 begins at 8:30 a.m. PH time in San Antonio, Texas. The series is also a race-to-four format.
The Spurs advanced with a dramatic 111-103 Game 7 victory over defending champion Oklahoma City, largely thanks to Victor "Wemby" Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 French star, this year's Defensive Player of the Year, led the Spurs to an improbable Game 1 win by hitting a 28-foot three-pointer to force double overtime, finishing with 41 points and 24 rebounds. He recorded 19 blocks in the series, breaking Alonzo Mourning's record of 18. Wembanyama averaged 28.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 38.8 minutes per game, winning all nine votes as Western Conference Finals MVP. In his third NBA season, he helped the Spurs improve from 22 wins in his rookie year to 34 in his sophomore year and 62 this season.
