PAF to Get First FA-50 Block 70 Jets in 2028

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) confirmed on Friday that the initial delivery of South Korean-made FA-50 Block 70 fighter aircraft is scheduled for 2028. The jets, capable of Mach 1.5 speeds, represent a major upgrade to the country's air defense capabilities.

Delivery Timeline and Contract Details

Air Force spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco stated that deliveries will occur in batches of two aircraft until all 12 units are received by 2030. The contract, signed on June 3, 2025, with Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI), is valued at over USD 700 million. The package includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system.

Strategic Importance

The acquisition falls under the Armed Forces of the Philippines Rehorizon 3. The FA-50 Block 70 features advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and extended operational range. The Department of National Defense (DND) said the jets align with the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, enhancing national defense and bilateral cooperation with South Korea.

Previously, the DND acquired 12 FA-50 aircraft for PHP 18.9 billion under Horizon 1 of the AFP Modernization Program (2015-2017). These earlier jets have served as the PAF's primary air defense aircraft, patrolling the West Philippine Sea.

Defense Cooperation Meeting

The DND expressed gratitude to the South Korean government during the 27th Philippines–Republic of Korea Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) on Logistics and Defense Industry Cooperation, held in Mandaluyong City on June 23. The meeting focused on advanced defense modernization, logistics cooperation, and defense industry development.

DND Assistant Secretary for Logistics and Acquisition Rene Raoul Rommel Honasan, who co-chaired the meeting with South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration Vice Minister Il Dong Kim, said: "As the AFP continues its modernization efforts, we appreciate the support of the Republic of Korea and the continued interest of Korean defense companies in supporting the AFP Modernization Program."

The meeting followed the state visit of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to the Philippines, where defense cooperation was highlighted as a key area of bilateral collaboration. It built on the outcomes of the 26th JCM in Busan (February 2025), which emphasized long-term sustainment, lifecycle management, technology transfer, and defense industry cooperation.

Discussions advanced sustainment and maintenance initiatives for existing platforms, logistics support mechanisms, maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities, technology and knowledge exchanges, and opportunities for defense industry development and capability sustainment.
