The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued 28 individuals aboard a motorboat that drifted at sea off the coast of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on Monday, June 22, 2026. The Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Central Tawi-Tawi reported the incident on Wednesday, June 24.
Engine failure leads to distress call
The motorboat, identified as M/L Fatima Ameera, was en route to Bongao when its engine malfunctioned, causing the vessel to drift. The crew issued a distress call, prompting an immediate response from the CGS-Central Tawi-Tawi and the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS)-Bongao.
Personnel from both stations swiftly deployed to the scene and located the drifting motorboat. All 28 passengers were safely evacuated, and the vessel was towed to a secure location.
Coordinated rescue operation
"Through the prompt response and coordinated efforts of the responding units, M/L Fatima Ameera was safely rescued and towed to a secure location, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew," the CGS-Central Tawi-Tawi said in a statement.
The successful operation underscores the PCG's commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lives at sea in the waters of Tawi-Tawi. No injuries were reported among the rescued individuals.
