The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has confirmed that the drones that attacked its Barakah nuclear power plant last week originated from Iraq, raising concerns about regional security amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 17, when a drone struck an electrical generator near the plant in Abu Dhabi, causing a fire but no reported injuries or radiation contamination. Two other drones were intercepted by authorities.
Details of the Attack
The Barakah plant is the UAE's only nuclear facility and supplies nearly a quarter of the country's electricity. Although a ceasefire was implemented on April 8, reports of attacks from Iraqi territory on Gulf states continue. In March, the Barakah plant was included in a list of potential targets published by Iranian newspapers.
Regional Implications
This attack underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with non-state actors potentially using Iraqi soil to launch strikes. The UAE has called for an international investigation and increased security measures to protect critical infrastructure.
