Iloilo City Kicks Off 53rd Paraw Regatta Festival with Maritime Celebration

Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas officially inaugurated the 53rd Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival in Arevalo, Iloilo City, marking over five decades of rich maritime heritage under the inspiring theme "Sailing Forward, Guided by Tradition." The festival's opening program prominently featured the Paraw Main Sailing Race, a cornerstone event that draws spectators and participants alike to celebrate Iloilo's coastal identity.

Mayor Treñas Emphasizes Tradition and Community Spirit

Mayor Raisa Treñas was joined by key figures including Honorato "Tiyo Tatoy" Espinosa, Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival Chair John Lex Espinosa Bayombong, Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. Chair Rito Judgee Peña, and representatives from JCI Iloilo and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce-Iloilo. In her address, Treñas highlighted the festival's enduring legacy, stating, "For 53 years, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival has carried forward a proud tradition of culture, competition, and community spirit—and the journey is far from over."

She elaborated on how the event reflects the Ilonggo character, rooted in resilience and shared values. "Every time the colorful sails of our paraw glide across the sea, we are reminded of who we are as Ilonggos: resilient like the wind, steady like the sea, and always moving forward," Treñas said. She added that the theme celebrates "more than five decades of courage, skill, and unity that define our maritime heritage and coastal communities."

Treñas underscored the importance of collective effort, noting, "Guided by tradition, our progress remains anchored in our history, culture, and values, and like the paraw, we grow stronger when government, private sector, and communities work together."

Paraw Main Sailing Race Showcases Craftsmanship and Heritage

The main sailing event captivated audiences along the shores of Arevalo, with paraw boats adorned in painted sails navigating the waters in a vibrant display of craftsmanship. Treñas described the scene, saying, "The shores of Arevalo come alive as layag painted with stories sail proudly across the waves, carrying color, culture, and the true Ilonggo spirit."

She further emphasized the event's significance as a living maritime legacy, symbolizing Iloilo City's identity. The Paraw Regatta Festival is recognized as one of the city's premier cultural events, focusing on traditional sailboat racing and activities that honor Iloilo's deep maritime roots.

Culinary and Artistic Highlights Enhance Festival Experience

Beyond the sailing race, the festival featured the Search for Best Tasting Lechon, a competition that showcases Ilonggo culinary excellence. Treñas praised the entries, noting their delicious flavors and crispy textures, which highlight local cooking techniques and pride in Ilonggo cuisine.

Additionally, the Pinta sa Regatta event allowed artists to transform paraw sails into canvases, depicting heritage and creativity through vibrant murals. Treñas remarked, "Color and beautiful images bring the sails to life, turning them into murals that represent the heritage, hope, and creativity of our Ilonggo artists." She added that these designs carry stories and identity, serving as an impactful showcase of local talent and artistic excellence.

Festival Continues to Promote Maritime Legacy

Now in its 53rd year, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival remains a vital platform for sailing competitions, cultural exhibitions, and culinary events. It underscores Iloilo City's commitment to preserving its maritime legacy while fostering community pride and participation. The festival's blend of tradition and innovation ensures it remains a highlight in the region's cultural calendar, celebrating the enduring spirit of the Ilonggo people.
