The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Philippines has disclosed receiving multiple reports of health issues potentially linked to specific infant formula products currently under a voluntary recall by Nestlé Philippines.
Health Reports and Symptoms Documented
As of January 15, 2025, the regulatory agency has logged a total of 25 reports associated with Nan Optipro and Nankid Optipro formula products. Out of these, eighteen reports specifically detail health concerns observed by parents or caregivers following their children's consumption of the subject infant formula.
The FDA stated that the reported symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other conditions. The agency noted that some of these cases were serious enough to require medical attention.
Ongoing Regulatory Oversight and Recall Details
The FDA is maintaining close coordination with Nestlé Philippines Inc., the Market Authorization Holder. The company has been directed to provide regular and timely updates on the implementation, assessment, and progress of the voluntary recall.
"Established procedures remain in place for the receipt, documentation, assessment, and appropriate disposition of consumer complaints, including reports of suspected adverse events," the FDA assured the public. The agency added that it continues to exercise regulatory oversight through review of submitted information and post-market surveillance.
Affected Products and Cause of Recall
The voluntary recall was initiated after the detection of very low levels of cereulide in the arachidonic acid-rich (ARA) oil supplied to Nestlé. This contamination has affected fourteen specific types of formula milk products.
