DOH, MinDA Launch Measles-Rubella Vax Drive in Mindanao, Jan 19-Feb 18
Measles-Rubella Immunization Drive Launched in Mindanao

The Department of Health (DOH), with strong backing from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), has officially launched a critical region-wide immunization campaign aimed at shielding children from measles and rubella. The Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) kicked off on Monday, January 19, 2026, with simultaneous events in key Mindanao cities.

Government Unites for Child Health and Future Growth

MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno underscored that the campaign is a cornerstone of human capital development for the region. He framed healthy children as the foundation of strong communities and sustained economic progress. "This immunization drive is a vital public health intervention and a demonstration of strong inter-agency collaboration," Magno stated, emphasizing that investing in children's health is an investment in Mindanao's future.

The national launch was spearheaded by Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa in General Santos City. He explained the campaign's goal is to seek out and protect "zero-dose" children—those who have missed all routine vaccinations. The activity runs from January 19 to February 18, 2026. "This is to sweep all zero-dose children or those who have not received any vaccination. It will reduce outbreaks, reduce deaths and hospitalizations due to complications of measles," Herbosa said in Filipino.

Davao Region Mobilizes with "Chikiting Ligtas" Campaign

In Davao Region, the DOH-Davao formally commenced the MR-SIA at SM Lanang Premier in Davao City. The ceremonial event featured the symbolic vaccination of children from Barangay Ubalde, witnessed by local officials and health workers.

DOH-Davao Regional Director OIC Dr. Ellenietta HMV N. Gamolo called on all parents and guardians to actively participate. Acting Davao City Health Officer Dr. Tomas Miguel Ababon issued a stark warning about the disease's contagious nature. "This is a very infectious disease. A single child can infect at least 11 to 12 others," he said, highlighting the severe risks for unvaccinated and malnourished children. The local campaign, branded "Chikiting Ligtas," will continue until February 13, 2026.

To ensure maximum reach, vaccination posts are established in:

  • Barangay Health Centers
  • Schools and designated community areas
  • Malls and other accessible public spaces

A National Priority Backed by Record Investment

The national government has allocated a historic P448 billion budget for the DOH in 2026, which officials confirm will bolster vaccination coverage, primary healthcare, and disease surveillance. By prioritizing Mindanao in the campaign's first phase, the government aims to protect children in geographically isolated, disadvantaged, and indigenous communities.

Secretary Herbosa reaffirmed that vaccines are among the most effective public health tools ever developed. The campaign will also include the distribution of Vitamin A supplements to enhance children's overall immunity. This MR-SIA is integrated with broader national efforts on maternal care and nutrition, forming a unified strategy to cut preventable child deaths and build a healthier Filipino population.
