DOH's 'Ligtas Tigdas' Immunization Drive Achieves Milestone in Mindanao
The Department of Health (DOH) has announced a significant achievement in its ongoing efforts to protect children from preventable diseases. In a late Friday update on January 23, 2026, the agency reported that more than one million children in Mindanao and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have been vaccinated against measles and rubella during the initial week of the "Ligtas Tigdas" immunization campaign.
Vaccination Progress and Regional Highlights
According to the DOH's January 23 report, this impressive figure represents approximately 36 percent of the 2.8 million children aged six to 59 months targeted for vaccination in Phase 1 of the program. The campaign aims to reach a broad demographic to ensure comprehensive coverage and herd immunity across the region.
Northern Mindanao emerged as a standout performer in the vaccination efforts, recording the highest number of vaccinated children. The region administered the measles-rubella vaccine to about 230,000 children, showcasing effective local implementation and community engagement.
Additional Health Measures and Public Warnings
Beyond the core immunization activities, the DOH is also providing Vitamin A supplements to bolster children's immune systems. This complementary measure is designed to enhance overall health resilience and support the body's defense mechanisms against infections.
The health department has reiterated its earlier warnings about the highly contagious nature of measles and rubella. Officials emphasized that a single infected child can transmit the virus to as many as 16 unvaccinated children, underscoring the critical need for widespread vaccination to curb transmission chains.
Importance of Vaccination and Future Plans
Vaccination remains the most effective strategy to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and deaths associated with these diseases. The DOH has stressed that timely immunization not only protects individual children but also contributes to community-wide health security by reducing outbreak risks.
The vaccination campaign in Mindanao is set to continue through February, with Phase 1 focusing on intensive coverage in the region. Following this, the program will be expanded to Luzon and the Visayas in June, as part of a nationwide rollout to ensure all eligible children are protected.
Call to Action for Parents and Communities
Parents are strongly encouraged to coordinate with their local government units (LGUs) to facilitate their children's vaccination. The DOH and LGUs are working collaboratively to conduct vaccination activities in communities across the country, making it accessible and convenient for families.
This joint effort highlights the importance of community participation and government partnership in achieving public health goals. By working together, stakeholders can ensure that every child receives the necessary protection against measles and rubella, paving the way for a healthier future generation.
