Two Lanao del Sur Families End 2-Year Rido with Peace Pact
Warring Families in Lanao del Sur Forge Peace Agreement

In a significant step towards lasting harmony, two warring families in Lanao del Sur have formally ended a violent conflict that spanned more than two years. The resolution came through a traditional peace agreement signed on Thursday, January 8, 2026, following an extensive process of dialogue and mediation.

The Path to Peace: Mediation and Dialogue

The 64th Infantry Battalion (64IB) confirmed that the peace settlement was between the family of the late Sultan Makalnas Amoran Ditangkugan from Buribid village in Tubaran, and the family of Abdulrashid Makaraya from Marantao town. The signing ceremony was held at the Macabayaw Compound in Poblacion village, Marogong town.

Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Gaviola, who witnessed the historic event, credited local peace-minded officials for their crucial role. The signing was facilitated by Marogong Vice Mayor Haroun Maruhom together with Lumbaca Unayan Mayor Jamalia Aloyodan. Their months-long effort paved the way for the families to come to the negotiating table.

Roots of the Conflict and Traditional Resolution

The dispute, classified as a rido or clan feud, tragically began with a vehicular accident along the Calanogas town highway on February 28, 2023. The incident resulted in the death of Sultan Ditangkugan, sparking a cycle of violence between the families.

To resolve the feud, the parties engaged in a traditional settlement process. This involved the customary payment of blood money (diya), a practice deeply rooted in local culture aimed at achieving justice and closure. The formal acceptance of this settlement effectively dissolved the conflict and restored harmony.

A Community Effort for Lasting Stability

The peace pact signing was a community affair, witnessed by:

  • Municipal government officials
  • Traditional and community leaders
  • Philippine National Police personnel
  • Military representatives

Lt. Col. Gaviola emphasized that this successful settlement highlights the critical importance of collaboration among local government units, traditional leaders, security forces, and the community itself. This multi-sectoral approach is seen as vital for sustaining peace and stability in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

He added that the military will continue to support peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms, viewing them as a key pillar for achieving lasting peace and fostering development across Lanao del Sur. This event stands as a powerful example of how local initiatives can heal divisions and build a more secure future.
