The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is maintaining close surveillance over five Philippine-flagged vessels that are reportedly immobilized within designated danger zones in the Middle East. These ships have been unable to proceed with their voyages since hostilities intensified in the region toward the end of February.
Fleet Operations and Communication Efforts
The five affected vessels are part of a larger fleet of sixteen oil and chemical tankers based in the Philippines that operate globally. In response to the situation, MARINA spokesperson Director Luistro Delos Santos confirmed that Administrator Sonia Malaluan has initiated communication with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The objective is to secure safe passage for these ships through the contested routes.
While Director Delos Santos did not explicitly confirm whether the tankers are stalled specifically in the Strait of Hormuz, he emphasized that MARINA acted swiftly after Iran granted permission for vessels bound for the Philippines to navigate those waters. The agency is currently engaged in ongoing discussions with the tanker operators to assess their status and circumstances following the dispatched communications.
Destination Details and Crew Safety
Although the vessels fly the Philippine flag, officials clarified that their destinations are not the Philippines but other countries, including China. Despite the operational halt, monitoring by the agency indicates that the crews of all five tankers remain in safe conditions. They are situated in maritime areas previously declared as danger zones, underscoring the precarious environment in which they are operating.
