UAE Airports Partially Reopen, Thousands of Travelers Including Filipinos Can Depart

Airports in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have partially reopened, enabling more than 20,000 travelers, including Filipinos, to resume their departures following a temporary airspace closure. According to the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), "exceptional flight operations" have commenced, but passengers are advised not to proceed to airports until contacted by their airlines to avoid disruptions.

Philippine Consulate Cautiously Optimistic Amid Tensions

Consul General Ambrosio Brian Enciso III, head of the Philippine mission in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, stated that the Philippine Consulate in Dubai is "cautiously optimistic" about the resumption of some international flights from Dubai International Airport. However, the consulate continues to closely monitor the rapidly changing situation due to tensions between the US-Israel and Iran.

Of the over 1,000 Filipinos who requested repatriation, 586 are from Dubai. Meanwhile, a Philippine airline company has announced the cancellation of several flights to and from Doha, Riyadh, and Dubai from March 3 to 5. Affected passengers may opt for rebooking or refunds.

Background on Airspace Closure and Reopening

The reopening of UAE airspace follows its temporary closure on March 1 due to attacks by Iran. Operations gradually resumed on the evening of March 2. This development comes as a relief to thousands of stranded travelers, though authorities emphasize the need for caution and adherence to airline instructions.

The partial reopening marks a significant step in restoring normalcy to air travel in the region, but ongoing geopolitical tensions underscore the fragility of the situation. Travelers are urged to stay informed through official channels and their airlines for the latest updates.
