US Implements Full Maritime Blockade on Iranian Ports Following Presidential Proclamation
In a significant escalation of tensions, the United States Central Command (Centcom) has officially declared the implementation of a comprehensive maritime blockade targeting all Iranian ports. The blockade, which took effect on April 13, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (1400 GMT), was announced via the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Scope and Enforcement of the Blockade
According to the statement released by Centcom, the blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations that are entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas. This includes all Iranian ports located in the strategically vital Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. However, Centcom emphasized that freedom of navigation will not be impeded for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, ensuring that global trade routes remain open for other nations.
The command has committed to notifying commercial ships in advance of the blockade. All vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz are advised to monitor maritime broadcasts closely and to contact US naval forces if necessary. This move aims to prevent any accidental confrontations and ensure the safety of international shipping in the region.
President Trump's Statements on the Blockade and Iran's Military
US President Donald Trump addressed the blockade late Sunday, confirming its implementation and highlighting international cooperation. He stated that other nations are working alongside the United States to prevent Iran from selling oil, which he believes will be a highly effective measure. Trump arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where he spoke to reporters about the ongoing situation.
Trump claimed that the ceasefire with Iran is holding well and asserted that Iran's military has been largely destroyed. In his words, "Their whole Navy is underwater," indicating a significant degradation of Iran's naval capabilities. He further argued that Iran's manufacturing capability for missiles and drones has been largely defeated, and accused Tehran of breaking promises related to peace talks.
Impact on Global Oil Trade and Iran's Economic Pressure
The president noted that many tankers are rerouting to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, heading instead toward the United States to fill up with oil. Trump boasted that the US has more oil than Russia and Saudi Arabia combined, which he cited as the reason for this shift in tanker routes. He described Iran as being in very bad shape and very desperate to reach a deal, though he expressed indifference about whether Iran returns to the negotiation table, stating, "I don't care if they come back or not. If they don't come back, I'm fine."
Background of Recent Conflicts and Diplomatic Efforts
This blockade follows a period of intense conflict and diplomatic stalemate. Iranian and US delegations recently concluded 21 hours of talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, early Sunday without reaching an agreement. Since February 28, more than 3,000 people have been killed in US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Iran launched retaliatory strikes in Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets before a two-week ceasefire was announced.
The blockade represents a critical development in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, with potential far-reaching implications for global maritime security, oil markets, and regional stability in the Middle East.
