Security Forces Clash with Terror Group in Lanao del Norte

Armed forces of the Philippines successfully neutralized a member of the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group (DI-MG) during a military operation in Lanao del Norte on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The encounter resulted in the death of one terrorist and the recovery of five high-powered firearms.

Details of the Firefight

The clash occurred in Sitio Palangakon, Pawak village, Salvador, Lanao del Norte when troops from the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting a routine operation. According to military reports, the government forces were fired upon by a group of DI-MG members, triggering a 20-minute firefight.

Brigadier General Ronel Manalo, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, identified the slain terrorist as Ibrahim Ampaso, who was also known by the aliases Ibra and Abu Raas. Following the intense exchange of gunfire, the remaining DI-MG members fled the area, leaving behind Ampaso's body and their weapons.

Significant Weapons Cache Recovered

Military personnel conducted a thorough search of the encounter site and recovered a substantial arsenal of weapons and equipment. The seized items included:

  • Two M16A1 rifles
  • Two M14 rifles
  • One M203 grenade launcher
  • Multiple smartphones
  • Hand-held radio transceivers
  • Various ammunition with magazines

This recovery represents a significant blow to the terrorist group's operational capabilities in the region.

Military Leadership Commends Troops

Brigadier General Manalo praised the operating troops for their professionalism and bravery during the successful mission. "We commend the professionalism and bravery of our troops and police partners in denying violent extremist elements a haven; we remain committed to lawful, intelligence driven operations to protect our communities," Manalo stated.

Major General Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., 1st Infantry Division commander, emphasized that the neutralization of this high-value target demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated operations and public cooperation. "We urge citizens to continue sharing information to help dismantle extremist networks," Barroquillo added, highlighting the crucial role of community support in maintaining security.
