ASEAN Summit Addresses Key Concerns
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the ASEAN Summit plenary on May 8, 2026, focusing on three critical priorities affecting member states due to rising tensions in the Middle East: energy, food, and the security of ASEAN nationals. The president stressed the importance of ensuring solutions to these issues in accordance with ASEAN rules to achieve orderly and concrete approaches.
Energy Security
First on the agenda was energy security. Marcos emphasized the need to strengthen coordination and preparedness through practical and collective measures to ensure adequate electricity supply amid unpredictable times. He highlighted that developing alternative and renewable energy sources is key to avoiding sudden economic shocks and addressing climate change challenges. The responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was cited as a way to enhance energy forecasting, improve grid management, and facilitate the transition to clean energy.
Food Security
The second topic addressed the rising prices of commodities, particularly food, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Leaders discussed enhancing intra-ASEAN trade and strengthening the regional food system to mitigate these impacts.
Security of ASEAN Nationals
Third, ensuring the safety of ASEAN nationals was tackled by improving early warning systems, consular coordination, and emergency assistance, alongside using AI for more efficient services.
Marcos stated, "...we gather to confront with unity and resolve the repercussions of the situation in the Middle East and seek to advance our common commitment to peace, stability and prosperity while ensuring that the benefits of our cooperation are felt by all our peoples."
