The Philippine Embassy in France has asserted that it cannot act in any way that would violate the sovereignty of its host country, in connection with the case of former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Elizaldy "Zaldy" Co, who has reportedly sought asylum in France.
Embassy Statement on International Law
Ambassador Ed De Vega stated that the embassy must comply with international law and cannot simply arrest any Filipino in France. He emphasized that the situation is similar to the French Embassy in Manila, which cannot conduct police operations or make arrests within Philippine territory.
The Ambassador acknowledged public concern but stressed that government actions must follow proper legal processes and diplomatic channels. He added that all further statements on the matter will come exclusively from the Office of the President.
Background of the Case
Earlier, Philippine officials in Prague confirmed that Co is no longer in Czech custody. The Department of Foreign Affairs clarified that his regular and diplomatic passports were canceled as early as December 2025, and this was reported to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
