Russia Declares Unilateral Ceasefire in Ukraine

The Russian military has declared a unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The ceasefire will take effect from May 8 to 9, coinciding with the observance of World War II Victory Day. In a statement, the ministry said the decision was made in accordance with the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, President Vladimir Putin. Russia stated that the ceasefire is based on humanitarian considerations and aims to allow for Victory Day celebrations. Despite this, Russian forces will remain in defensive positions and have threatened a strong response if Ukraine violates the ceasefire. On the other hand, Ukraine has announced its own ceasefire from May 5 to 6 and considers Russia's proposed truce as insincere. This year's Victory Day in Russia marks the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
