Russia launched a massive wave of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of May 5, targeting the power grid and other infrastructure, killing at least five people and wounding 39 others, according to Ukrainian officials.
Details of the Attack
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia used 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 164 drones in the coordinated assault. While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority of the incoming threats, several missiles and drones successfully struck their targets, including energy facilities across the country.
Damage to Energy Infrastructure
State energy firm Naftogaz confirmed that natural gas facilities in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions were hit. The company stated that its facilities have been repeatedly targeted since the beginning of the year, highlighting a sustained campaign against Ukraine's energy grid.
Political Reactions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, calling them an example of Moscow's "utter cynicism," especially as they coincided with a temporary ceasefire. Russia announced it would implement a unilateral ceasefire in the coming days to mark Victory Day, but warned it would retaliate if Ukraine attacks. In response, Kyiv stated it is ready to observe the ceasefire if Russia does the same, but warned of retaliation for any violations.
Ongoing Hostilities
Despite the ceasefire declarations, exchanges of attacks continue between the two nations. Ukraine has also launched long-range strikes into Russian territory, escalating the conflict further.
