LTO Takes Action Against Bus Driver and Owner Following Viral Manila Collision
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed strict penalties in response to a shocking multiple vehicle collision that occurred along Taft Avenue in Manila earlier this week. On Friday, February 6, 2026, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao announced the suspension of the bus driver involved and summoned both the driver and the registered owner to face administrative charges.
Details of the Taft Avenue Incident
The collision took place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, when an out-of-control passenger bus collided with several vehicles on the busy Manila thoroughfare. According to a viral video that circulated on social media platforms, the bus struck five motorcycles, three multi-purpose vehicles, and one van during the incident. This resulted in injuries to nine individuals, highlighting the severe risks posed by irresponsible driving on public roads.
LTO's Immediate Response and Penalties
In a firm statement, Lacanilao emphasized the LTO's commitment to road safety, declaring, "We will not allow such irresponsible drivers or terribly-maintained vehicles to cause such dangers." As part of the initial measures, the bus driver has received a 90-day suspension from operating any vehicle. Additionally, the bus involved in the collision has been placed on alarm status with the LTO, effectively blocking any transactions related to the vehicle until the investigation concludes.
Administrative Charges and Upcoming Hearings
The LTO has issued a show-cause order to explore filing administrative charges against the bus driver for reckless driving and being deemed an improper person to operate a motor vehicle. Simultaneously, the registered owner of the bus is facing an administrative charge for hiring a reckless driver. Both parties have been summoned to appear before the LTO at 2 p.m. on Monday to submit a written explanation defending themselves against these allegations.
Lacanilao reinforced the agency's stance, stating, "The LTO's action is proof of our determination to ensure accountability for traffic law violators and guarantee road safety for all." This case underscores the ongoing efforts by Philippine authorities to crack down on traffic violations and enhance public safety on the nation's roads.
