Cebu Hospital Launches Lung Health Forum, Offers Free Tests
Cebu Hospital Hosts Lung Cancer Awareness Forum

In a significant move to combat respiratory diseases, the Perpetual Succour Hospital Cebu Cancer Institute, in partnership with its Section of Pulmonology, launched a public health forum on November 21, 2025. The event, titled "Breathe Right, Live Bright: A Lung Health Awareness Lay Forum," was held at the Our Mother of Perpetual Succour Specialty Center lobby as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month observances.

Comprehensive Approach to Lung Health Education

The forum addressed critical aspects of lung health, focusing on three main topics: the dangers of smoking and vaping, effective methods to quit smoking, and comprehensive information about lung cancer including its risk factors. Medical experts presented compelling evidence showing how both traditional tobacco use and modern vaping practices contribute to the increasing cases of lung diseases in the Philippines.

Pulmonologists and cancer specialists shared diverse perspectives on the growing health crisis, emphasizing that both smoking and vaping significantly increase lung disease risks. The discussions highlighted the importance of early prevention, regular screening, and positive lifestyle changes in maintaining respiratory health.

Free Medical Services and Expert Warnings

The hospital demonstrated its commitment to community health by offering free pulmonary function tests (spirometry) for the first 50 attendees who met any of the following criteria: individuals with persistent cough, former or current smokers who consumed at least one pack of cigarettes daily for 10 years, and adults aged 40 years and above.

Medical specialists issued urgent warnings to the public, with Dr. Ellie May Belarmino Villegas, a Medical Oncologist, strongly advising non-smokers never to start and encouraging current smokers to quit immediately due to the clear health benefits. She emphasized the crucial role of lifestyle habits in disease prevention.

Vaping Emerges as New Health Threat

Adding to the concerns about traditional tobacco, Dr. Merci Angelie Uy, a Pulmonologist, revealed alarming new data about vaping-related lung diseases. She reported that some non-tobacco smoking patients with a history of vaping are now being diagnosed with sinus and lung cancer, indicating that vaping presents serious, previously underestimated health risks.

Meanwhile, Dr. Junjie Zuasula recommended participation in the hospital's Tobacco Cessation Program as an effective strategy for those struggling to quit smoking. The program provides professional support and proven methods to help individuals overcome tobacco addiction.

The forum served as a crucial platform for Cebu residents to access vital health information and medical services, reinforcing the hospital's mission to promote respiratory wellness and combat the growing threat of lung diseases in the community.
