DILG Directs Local Governments to Promote Active Lifestyles Through Community Initiatives
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued a strong directive to local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines, urging them to intensify programs that foster active and healthy lifestyles among residents. This move comes as part of a broader national effort to address growing public health concerns.
Memorandum Circular 2026-008 Outlines Key Strategies
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the DILG detailed specific measures under Memorandum Circular 2026-008. LGUs are encouraged to organize accessible outdoor activities, including fun runs, Zumba sessions, and various community sports events. These initiatives aim to make physical activity more engaging and widely available to all demographics.
The circular emphasizes the expansion and maintenance of green public spaces, such as parks, plazas, and open areas, where residents can safely exercise and enjoy outdoor time. Importantly, these spaces must feature accessible pathways and ramps to ensure full participation by senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Car-Free Sundays Gain Momentum Nationwide
A standout recommendation is the adoption of car-free Sundays, which temporarily close streets to vehicular traffic, creating safer environments for walking, cycling, and community gatherings. This initiative has already seen success in several cities, including multiple areas in Metro Manila, as well as Baguio, Iloilo, and Davao.
Regional directors have been tasked with supporting and monitoring these efforts, ensuring they align with the goal of building healthier communities and enhancing the overall quality of life for Filipinos.
Addressing Rising Obesity Rates with Presidential Support
This push by the DILG supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to prioritize citizen health, particularly in light of alarming statistics from the 2023 National Nutrition Survey. The data reveals that four in ten Filipino adults are overweight or obese, highlighting an urgent need for proactive measures.
By promoting regular physical activity and improving access to recreational areas, the government aims to curb these trends and foster a culture of wellness. The integration of car-free initiatives not only encourages exercise but also reduces air pollution and enhances community cohesion.
As LGUs implement these strategies, residents can look forward to more opportunities for fitness and social interaction in their neighborhoods, contributing to a healthier, more vibrant society.
