Road Crash Injuries Double in PH Holiday Season, DOH Reports 11,146 Cases
Holiday Road Crash Injuries Double in Philippines

The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a dramatic surge in road crash injuries during the recent holiday season, with cases nearly doubling compared to the preceding months. This alarming trend underscores the heightened dangers on Philippine roads during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Sharp Rise in Holiday Road Injuries

In an advisory issued on Monday, December 22, 2025, the DOH revealed that 11,146 patients were treated for road crash injuries from December 2024 to January 2025. This data was collected through the Online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 210 participating hospitals and infirmaries.

The figure represents a near doubling of the 5,785 cases recorded in the two-month period of October and November 2024. The health department directly linked the spike to increased travel activity, heavier road traffic, and festive gatherings that characterize the holiday period.

Alcohol Consumption a Major Factor

A significant and concerning detail from the report is the role of alcohol. The DOH found that 1,173 of the injured patients had consumed alcohol prior to their accidents. This reinforces long-standing warnings about impaired driving during celebrations, where alcohol consumption typically rises.

The advisory is part of the DOH's Ligtas Christmas 2025 campaign, which aims to reduce preventable injuries and prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed during peak seasons. Health officials strongly reminded motorists to avoid drinking alcohol if they plan to drive and to ensure they are well-rested before embarking on trips, especially the long-distance journeys common during the holidays.

Tragic Incident Highlights the Danger

The statistical warning follows a tragic accident that illustrates the severe consequences of road crashes. On December 18, 2022, in Orani, Bataan, a passenger bus crashed into a concrete electric post. The collision resulted in at least two fatalities and eleven injuries.

While this specific incident occurred in a previous year, it serves as a grim reminder of the potential outcomes of road accidents. The Bataan Police Provincial Office documented the crash, highlighting the ever-present risks on national roads.

The DOH emphasized that the annual pattern of increased travel and celebration necessitates heightened vigilance. The combination of more vehicles, longer trips, and alcohol consumption creates a perfect storm for accidents on major thoroughfares across the country. The public is urged to prioritize safety to ensure the holiday season remains a joyful time for all.
