Man in Pampanga Accidentally Swallows Braces Wire While Eating Kakanin
A resident of Mabalacat, Pampanga faced an unusual and alarming situation after inadvertently swallowing the wire from his braces during a meal of kakanin. According to Vincent John Jocson, he realized the wire was missing after swallowing and immediately felt a sharp, thorn-like pain in his throat.
Emergency Hospital Visit and Medical Procedure
Despite attempts to vomit the wire, Jocson was unable to expel it, prompting an urgent trip to the hospital. Medical professionals confirmed through examination that he had indeed swallowed the braces wire. The following day, he underwent a specialized procedure where doctors used a tube equipped with a camera and grasping tools to locate and extract the wire from his throat.
Rarity and Risks of Such Incidents
Experts note that cases like this are relatively rare but can be dangerous, especially if the swallowed wire is long, as it may cause internal injuries. Fortunately, in this instance, the approximately one-and-a-half-inch wire was successfully retrieved. Jocson recovered after spending one night in the hospital under observation.
Safety Advice for Braces Wearers
Health specialists advise individuals with braces to take precautions to avoid similar incidents. Recommendations include:
- Avoiding hard or sticky foods that could dislodge braces components.
- Cutting food into small, manageable pieces before eating.
- Being mindful while chewing to prevent accidental ingestion of orthodontic materials.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of dental care and safety measures for those undergoing orthodontic treatment.
