The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has officially launched its Guaranteed and Accessible Medications for Outpatient Treatment (Gamot) program in Central Visayas, marking a significant expansion following its initial rollout in the National Capital Region. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, aims to enhance outpatient care by providing critical support to members and their dependents across the region.
Essential Medicines for Chronic Conditions
PhilHealth has confirmed that access to 75 essential medicines for common and chronic illnesses is now available in Central Visayas. The Gamot benefit is designed to strengthen outpatient care by offering members and their dependents medications for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, infections, and selected cardiovascular and neurologic disorders. This move addresses a pressing need for affordable and reliable healthcare solutions in the area.
Annual Benefits and Eligibility
Each beneficiary, whether a PhilHealth member or dependent, is entitled to up to P20,000 worth of medicines annually under the Gamot program. This financial support is intended to alleviate the burden of medical expenses and ensure consistent treatment for those managing long-term health issues.
Steps to Avail the Gamot Benefit
To access the Gamot benefit, members or dependents must first visit an accredited Yakap clinic for a medical consultation. After a thorough assessment, the Yakap physician will issue a prescription for the required medicines. The beneficiary then presents this prescription along with identification at an accredited Gamot provider to receive the medications.
Accredited Providers in Central Visayas
In Central Visayas, accredited Gamot providers include the Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital, Clinica Prime, partner pharmacy La Nueva, and the University of Cebu Medical Center. These facilities have been selected to ensure widespread availability and convenience for beneficiaries.
Future Expansion Plans
PhilHealth Spokesman Dr. Israel Francis Pargas emphasized the state-run health insurer's commitment to expanding the program. He expressed optimism about achieving nationwide full implementation within the year, highlighting PhilHealth's dedication to improving healthcare access across the Philippines. This expansion aligns with broader efforts to enhance public health services and reduce disparities in medical care.
