The San Fernando El Rey Parish church in the municipality of Liloan, Cebu, has officially reopened its doors to the faithful. This significant event took place on Sunday, November 23, 2025, marking a new chapter for the local Catholic community.
A Solemn Response to a Tragic Event
The Archdiocese of Cebu had made the decision to temporarily close the church after a tragic discovery was made on October 24. The body of a woman was found inside the sacred building, an event that profoundly impacted the congregation.
This closure was enacted in accordance with Canon 1211 of the Code of Canon Law. The canon states that a sacred place becomes desecrated when it suffers grave injury through acts that are seriously disrespectful and cause scandal to the faithful. The finding of the deceased within the church premises fell under this provision, necessitating a period of closure and spiritual cleansing.
The Rites of Reconsecration and Holy Mass
Before the church could be reopened, a two-part Rites of Reconsecration (Rito sa Pagpahinungod Pag-usab) was solemnly performed. This sacred ceremony was designed to restore the holiness of the place of worship.
The reopening was then celebrated with a Holy Mass at 8:00 in the morning that same Sunday. The mass was led by Cebu Archbishop Alberto "Abet" Uy. He was joined by several prominent figures in the clergy, including Msgr. Juan Jose Dosado, the Episcopal Vicar; Fr. Joseph Larida, the Team Moderator; the entire Team of Pastors of the Parish; and other visiting priests.
A Call for Christ-like Leadership
During his homily at the solemn celebration, Archbishop Uy took the opportunity to address the congregation on a matter of profound spiritual and social importance. He urged the faithful to seek out and support leaders who follow the model of Jesus Christ.
Archbishop Uy elaborated that the nation continues to suffer, despite its wealth and resources, because many of its leaders—though not all—are similar to the Pharisees in the Gospel. He explained that these leaders are primarily concerned with securing their own personal salvation and well-being, rather than selflessly serving and addressing the needs of others.
His message served as a powerful reminder of the Christian calling to prioritize community and compassion over self-interest.
